Better Meetings through Destination Partnerships

GMIC Sustainability in Action Series

Released in May 2012 at IMEX Frankfurt, the Scandinavian Sustainable Destination Index measures and compares social and environmental sustainability performance between sixteen capital and regional cities in five nations. The project,commissioned by the ICCA Scandinavia Chapter, began in 2010 and has engaged a wide range of industry participants including Convention Bureau, Destination Marketing Organizations, Venues and Event Agencies.By sharing performance and stories of sustainability initiatives, the partners are collaborating with a goal to create the world´s first sustainable meetings region.

Join Project Steering Group Member Steen Jakobsen and Project Lead Guy Bigwood on this 60 minute webinar as they share their insights from the journey so far, including key findings, methodology, and next steps. The presentation will also include highlights of the inaugural European Sustainable Events Conference that will have just wrapped up the week prior in Copenhagen.

GMIC Guest Presenters: Steen Jakobsen and Guy Bigwood

Steen Jakobsen, Copenhagen Convention Bureau

Since 2006, Steen has been director of Copenhagen Convention Bureau – a member-based non-profit destination marketing organization that develops and promotes Copenhagen as a destination for international meetings and association congresses. Steen is actively engaged in the global meeting industry. He has served on the Board of Directors of International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA) since October 2008 and was appointed 3rd Vice President in 2011. He has also served on the GMIC Board of Directors since July 2011. Steen is an experienced and sought after speaker and presenter, and he’s a member of the IMEX Global Insights Standing Panel as well as the MPI Business Research Panel.Steen was chair of Best Cities Global Alliance from 2003 – 2007, an alliance of convention and visitors bureaus from Copenhagen, Berlin, Edinburgh, Houston, San Juan, Vancouver, Melbourne, Singapore, Cape Town and Dubai who work closely together to share best practice and business opportunities. Today, Steen serves on the Board of Directors of Best Cities Global Alliance. Steen was co-chair of MPI’s European Professional Education Conference in Copenhagen in 2007 and he was also a leading force behind the development of Copenhagen Sustainable Meetings Protocol – a strategic guide for sustainable meetings based on the learning from organizing the UN Climate Change Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen in 2009. Before joining Wonderful Copenhagen CVB, Steen worked for the Danish government at the Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs. Steen holds a Master degree in commerce and commercial law from Copenhagen Business School and the University of Sheffield.

Guy Bigwood, MCI Group

Recognized as a pioneer and expert on CSR and sustainability in the meetings industry, Guy manages a global consulting organization focused at implementing and advising on sustainability projects within associations, corporates, convention bureaus and venues worldwide. Guy founded and manages the CSR program in MCI Group, the leading global events and association Management Company with 32 international offices. He is past president of the GMIC Board of Directors, a former member of the MPI CSR Taskforce, an advisor to Green Globe and very active within the UN Global Compact and Climate Change communities. Involved in many industry CSR initiatives, Guy has been a contributor to the development of sustainability standards ISO 20121, APEX/ASTM and GRI EOSS. He is an energetic and passionate keynote speaker and workshop facilitator. Previously Guy was the founder and managing director of MCI in Spain. He is a serial entrepreneur with broad experience starting up and running large events and live communications agencies. His core skills are brand marketing, experiential communication and business strategy consulting. Before MCI, Guy had over 12 years of marketing and consulting experience working in the IT industry for Hewlett-Packard in the US, UK and France. When not working, Guy is to be found in the mountains climbing and exploring the remotest parts of the planet.
