Taryle Spain
Director of Client Services
Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority

Why did you join GMIC?
While working on the operations side for the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority (LVCVA), an opportunity to develop a more comprehensive recycle program for our facility presented itself which would in turn benefit our customers and community. Taking advantage of this opportunity, I sought out various sustainable groups, and GMIC being in its infancy stages during the time, intrigued me.

How long have you been a member?
If I remember correctly, I’ve been a member since 2007.

What is your sustainability philosophy?
I believe that we are reaching a point in which the earth’s resources can no longer support the continued growth of human population without our help and everyone can play a role in bettering our overall environment. On a more local level, educating the general public, holding suppliers/manufacturers to a higher level and doing the right thing will go a long way.

How do you incorporate sustainability into your life and work?
I’m a fan of working with my lights off when possible among other things. I have natural light coming through the window in my office and Las Vegas rarely lacks sunlight. On my personal side, I have a 12 year old daughter and she keeps Dad on track. She was put in charge of recycling at my house and now she’s self-appointed herself to Captain Save the Planet.

What is your greatest satisfaction in being a member of GMIC? (or what sets GMIC apart from other organizations you are a member of?)
Regardless of its continued growth, GMIC is a more personable group in which networking and meeting professionals from a wide range of industries is an admirable benefit.

What would you share with others just getting started incorporating sustainability or green practices into their works?
If you can’t do 100% right away (not many can), take it one step at a time starting with low hanging fruit. Also, don’t believe the industry rumors that sustainable products and/or methods cost a lot more because they can actually be cheaper and most important, if you’re a large enough company, use your purchasing power to help continue a sustainable direction.

What do your attendees/employees notice the most from your sustainability efforts?
They all have an appreciation for what the LVCVA is doing and continue looking forward to new initiatives and/or successes accomplished on a regular basis.

What do you need from the industry to continue to advance in the realm of sustainability?
Continued improvements on technology, sharing of successes and failures, and forward progress by all stakeholders.
